A: Of course, skydiving does carry a risk. You know that already. When destiny decides to toss a totally statistically unlikely scenario into our plans, we go straight to Plan B. Every tandem skydiving parachute has a backup parachute waiting in the wings. Interesting fact: the backup parachute is hooked up to a system that deploys it automatically in the one-in-a-million scenario that nobody lifts a finger to get it out.
Charles Plumb was a US Navy jet pilot in Vietnam. After 75 combat missions, his plane was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Plumb ejected and parachuted into enemy hands. He was captured and spent 6 years in a communist Vietnamese prison. He survived the ordeal and now lectures on lessons learned from that experience.
Everyone has someone who provides what they need to make it through the day. Plumb also points out that he needed many kinds of parachutes when his plane was shot down over enemy territory. He needed his physical parachute, his mental parachute, his emotional parachute and his spiritual parachute. He called on all these supports before reaching safety.
"I felt this story would be good to share with all of our people within the organization. This story presents to your people how important they are and that their position is a part of our system that makes everything come together. Regardless of the rank of hierarchy, your people are within any organization, their position is a vital link to the overall success."--Phil Burnside, Industrial Resources President

You are on an airplane with several other people all heading to your destination. Suddenly, the pilot comes over the intercom with an urgency in his voice to let everyone know the plane is going to crash. He explains that something toxic has entered the gas tank of the plane causing the fuel to no longer be useful.
Everyone immediately starts to panic. The pilot quickly gives everyone the good news that he prepared parachutes before taking off. Relief sets in, but you desperately want to know how to get one of these parachutes. He reassures everyone that there is a parachute for every single person and all you have to do is put it on.
The next thing he says is crucial. He is not sure when the plane will crash, and there will be a very small window of time when the plane is at the perfect altitude and speed for everyone to jump. He fervently warns that if you do not have your parachute securely fastened and you are not ready to jump when he says to jump, you will miss that very small window of time that will guarantee your survival.
In the scenario about the airplane, the passengers only had two options. They could immediately put on the parachute and be ready to jump at the exact moment which would guarantee survival, or they could refuse to put on the parachute and perish with the plane. Similarly, in life, we only have two options. We can choose to put on the Lord Jesus Christ immediately and secure our way into eternal life, or we can refuse to accept Him as our Savior, continue to live in sin, and go away into everlasting punishment. (Matthew 25:46)

Charles Plumb was a U.S. Navy pilot serving in the Vietnam. War. After 75 combat missions, his plane was destroyed by a surface- to-air missile. Plumb ejected and parachuted into enemy hands. He was captured and spent 6 years in a communist Vietnamese prison. He survived the ordeal and now lectures on lessons learned from that experience. One day, when Plumb and his wife were sitting in a restaurant, a man at another table came up and said, "You're Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!""How in the world did you know that" asked Plumb."I packed your parachute," the man replied.Plumb gasped in surprise and gratitude. The man pumped his hand and said, "I guess it worked!"Plumb assured him, "It sure did. If your chute hadn't worked, I wouldn't be here today."Plumb couldn't sleep that night, thinking about that man. Plumb says, "I kept wondering what he might have looked like in a Navy uniform: a white hat, a bib in the back, and bell-bottom trousers. I wonder how many times I might have seen him and not even said 'Good morning, how are you' or anything because, you see, I was a fighter pilot and he was just a sailor."Plumb thought of the many hours the sailor had spent on a long wooden table in the bowels of the ship, carefully weaving the shrouds and folding the silks of each chute, holding in his hands each time the fate of someone he didn't know. Now, Plumb asks his audience, "Who's packing your parachute" Everyone has someone who provides what they need to make it through the day. Plumb also points out that he needed many kinds of parachutes when his plane was shot down over enemy territory-he needed his physical parachute, his mental parachute, his emotional parachute, and his spiritual parachute. He called on all these supports before reaching safety.Sometimes in the daily challenges that life gives us, we miss what is really important. We may fail to say hello, please, or thank you, congratulate someone on something wonderful that has happened to them, give a compliment, or just do something nice for no reason. As you go through this week, this month, this year, recognize people who pack your parachute. I am sending you this as my way of thanking you for your part in packing my parachute !!! And I hope you will send it on to those who have helped pack yours..
He posits that by finding an organization you admire, figuring out what problems it is facing, and positioning yourself as the best person to fix them, that organization has no choice but to hire you, vacancy or not.

Thank you! This was the best article I have read. I will be sharing this with my colleagues and professors. I am a future educator who has never had a classroom, although my last few years have been substitute teaching. I also have two boys who are in high school and I always did not like the approach their various teacher have taken as to grading. I will be sharing your article to their principal and teachers as well. So powerful and you have no idea how much this has inspired my approach and belief in what you impart in this message. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
This assignment did not make my job as a counselor redundant. Rather, it helped me do it at a more advanced level, with better-informed clients who understood the hidden job market, that heart is more important than intellect in choosing your best skills, and how and why to do informational interviews. Bolles, who also co-wrote a guide for counselors, forever transformed the career field, and his words will continue to guide many readers and counselors alike. 153554b96e
